The Sébastien Truchet Vault project brought Carmelite Sébastien Truchet’s stereotomic improvements to the Abeille Vault together with contemporary architectural programming techniques. The project began by coding a single unit of the vault into a parametric model such that the thickness, width, and height of the unit could be easily varied. The unit was then multiplied and oriented accordingly to produce a planar surface of interlocking units. Apart from being able to vary a single unit, the number of units in the horizontal and vertical directions, and the cutting height of each unit could also be varied. The same process was then repeated for a more complex semi-cylinder surface and later for a Möbius strip. The logical sequence taken to arrive at the result is presented here.
