This is an outdoor billboard for Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago. The client was undergoing construction and was seeking a clever and edgy way to let the public know they were still open. This piece won an Addy Award, as did several other in the entire Hard Rock campaign.

We care about the polar bears. That's why we're donating a portion of our proceeds to protect arctic wildlife. We also care about our clients. That's why we maintain unrivaled customer care though clear communications. We're also impeccable with our word. So when we say we're giving part of our money to help save polar bears, we're not really using it to put a foosball table in the break room. We're really giving it to the bears. Not the actual bears, the people who help the bears. Anyway, check out our website to find out the best option for your company that'll help you save time, money and bears.

This piece is useful for beginners as it comes equipped with guiding handles that you won’t find on more advanced apparatuses, and it focuses on strengthening and stabilizing. While pressing down on the step with arms or legs, much of the stabilizing work is up to the torso; yes, it is as hard as it sounds. The good news is this apparatus activates the lower back, butt, shoulders, abs and pecks, helping you lift those erogenous zones to gravity-defying heights. From a rehabilitation perspective, the Chair is particularly effective for strengthening and rebalancing muscles that have been strained or injured, so hernias be damned! Better still, it doubles as a novel conversation piece, sure to complete any den or living room.

It’s like a medieval torture device with cushier upholstery. Created to assist in movements your puny muscles aren't yet strong enough to do on their own, this piece of equipment consists of a large metal frame with a moving carriage. Attached to it are springs and straps and other neat stuff that allow for hundreds of different butt-lifting moves. This baby works biceps, triceps, quadriceps and ceps you probably didn’t even know you had, without creating that beefed up, bulky look. Instead, your muscles become longer and stronger, and pretty soon you’ll be able to wriggle and twist in ways of near acrobatic proportions. It’s considered the most versatile of the contrology family of instruments, as it’s great for breathing, posture, lower back pain and those super-tricky Kama Sutra positions.

Locals Steal Parking Lots, Plant Trees

In Portland, Oregon, locals are taking it upon themselves to steal parking lots in order to plant trees.
Okay, it’s not stealing. It’s “de-paving.”

For years we’ve been paving paradise to put up parking lots, but according to these local tree-huggers, oversized driveways and abandoned parking lots need to kick rocks.

Depave, a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon is committed to promoting the removal of unnecessary paved areas to create more green spaces. Since 2007, the Depave crew and volunteer army have reverted more than 94,000 square feet of paved parking back to tree-filled parks, public green spaces, urban gardens, playgrounds and more.

See the problem is pavement. Paved surfaces keep the rain from the soil, diverting it to other waterways, picking up and carrying pollutants from antifreeze to pesticides along the way. Think about all the junk you see on streets and in parking lots – yeah now think about drinking it.
In addition to poisoning our water supply, in the summertime, paved urban areas are at least ten degrees hotter than their rural neighbors. Not only does this contribute to excessive use of electricity to power fans and

A/C units, but it also promotes the formation of ground-level ozone (the main culprit of smog). Who knew parking lots were such troublemakers?

As if toxic water, sweltering summers and suffocating smog aren’t enough, here are some more reasons to steal parking lots and plant trees.

If you’re in the Portland area you can check out Depave’s upcoming projects to get involved. If you’re not, they have an entire page online dedicated to teaching people how to depave in their own communities.

At the end of the day, there really isn’t a good reason NOT to Depave paradise. Heck even if you just want to get out some aggression, taking a sledgehammer to an unsuspecting parking lot could almost be therapeutic.

This is an example of a monthly newsletter that I wrote and managed for three years, dedicated to topical health issues, preventive care, health insurance advice, entrepreneur and business-building columns, events, member recognition and featured products.
