Spotlight: Motion Arts in the Behance Network
By Heather Ann Snodgrass

Motion. It's a constant element in all creative realms and in life, even when the end result is a product which stands still. Today, however, we are directing our attention to the opposite end of that spectrum -- towards all that is captured through film, stop motion, animation and video arts. Behance Network is proud to have such a strong presence of motion arts, the brightest of which we tender for your viewing pleasure today.
Someone in our office said that Ionisation is one of the "most beautiful pieces on Behance today." I agree -- it's beautiful like the Saw movies would have been without the blood, violence and quasi-philosphical dialogue. All kidding aside, Flat-e has created an incredible mechanical-based film, accompanied by a striking soundtrack which is appreciable regardless of context. A music video for band Conjov captures members of the band being projected onto various architectural landscapes in a stylized, slightly desaturated fashion. Royal Ink enlisted the help of Markus Schaefer to create a commercial which channels their underground sensibility for mass consumption, through the use of cut paper and lo-fi video techniques.
The collaboration between Serial Cut and Tavo entitled "Yeah!Reel" pretty much says is all: Yeah. It just goes to show that working with the right people (and clients including Zune and Nike USA) can take your portfolio presentation to new heights.
Documentaries make countless portfolio appearances on the network. The trailer for Beautiful Losers, which will explore the world of artists emerging from the underground youth subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk rock and hip-hop in the early 1990's, has been embraced worldwide by many who think April 2008 -- the date Sidetrack Films has it slated for release -- can't come soon enough. m ss ng p eces is the team responsible for the production of Cool Hunting Video, which shifts the sites' content away from the written format into something much more insightful and interactive. Their work on TED 2007 and Matthew Dear are also well worth a look.
We would be remiss to not mention animation in this realm -- the ethereal work of Jorge J. Navarro Gonzalez on Donkey Xote elicits childhood whimsy in us, even without seeing it in motion. First National Bank celebrated 150 years of service and recruited the talent of one Chris Thompson to create a mixed media project which is a feast for the eyes. Thomspon also supports the egotistical explosion that is college football of late with his storyboard for College Football on Versus. They are football players. They mean business. One day they will make more money than you.
You know those UPS commercials with the guy sketching out "what brown can do for you?" V Water [Viral Animation] is like those, except the guy isn't annoying, doesn't have a bad haircut and the musical accompaniment is totally fun and catchy. It also happens to be the most viewed project on the network to date. While we're on the subject of Behance Network All-Stars, there's a reason that Star Wars vs. Star Trek is one of Behance Networks most appreciated projects. Lichtfaktor, a Germany-based outfit used tripods, stop motion and lights to create an innovative, awe-inspiring short for New Zealand's Sky Movies -- this is the kind of link your friends won't get upset about you passing along. Light streaking also appears in the promo for SpikeTV's "The Ultimate Fighter 2," created by Anders Schroder -- he's also responsible for the Gatorade colored-sweat commercials, and the intro for MTV's "Isle of MTV."
