I'm a Londoner, and in that city was one of the founding editors of True
magazine, which became Trace a year later, in 1995. I worked closely with
the magazine’s art director, and became fascinated with the process of
visually defining a state of mind. In 1998 we brought the magazine to the
US, and I relocated to NYC.
In 2000 I left Trace and became the Creative Director of The Fader magazine,
at its inception. I was there for four years, and defined the visual
attitude and content architecture (which remains intact to this day). In
2003 we won an Annual Editor’s Choice Award for best use of color
photography, and received honorable mention for use of black & white.
Thereafter I became Creative Director of BlackBook magazine, and oversaw a
complete redesign there, and a return to the core agenda of that magazine,
which was to focus on the most interesting actors, musicians, artists and
fashion designers of the moment. I also executed advertorial special
projects for clients including Alexander McQueen/Puma, Lexus, Perrier Joüet,
San Miguel and Chevrolet.
During the same period, I launched a publication called Something In The
Way, devoted to documenting the intersection between art and fashion, and
their impact on the culture at large.
I left BlackBook in 2006 to concentrate on freelance art direction projects,
including Spread ArtCulture magazine, of which I am Creative Director; Big
magazine, where I am Associate Creative Editor; City magazine, where I am
Creative Director, and TMM Group, for whom I have worked on projects for
Absolut, Möet & Chandon, Natura, Casio and Jacob & Co.
I have written forewords and introductions to several photography and art
books, including Remastered, by Sebastien Agneessens, and Trenchtown Love,
by Patrick Cariou.
